PlayStation repair, by model

The PS5's HDMI port is the single most common console repair on our bench, and the PS4 is still coming in every week. Here is what goes wrong on each and what the repair involves.

PS5: no signal on the TV

A PS5 that powers on, lights up and gives the TV nothing is an HDMI port fault nearly every time. The port is surface-mounted and its pins bend or its joints crack when the cable is pushed in at an angle or pulled sideways. The repair is micro-soldering: the console comes fully apart, the cooler and its liquid-metal compound are removed, the board comes out, the old port is removed under hot air, the pads are inspected and repaired if lifted, a new port is fitted, and the console is rebuilt with the thermal compound reapplied correctly. Then it runs on a real display under load for an extended test, because a port that drops out warm is not fixed. If the port is fine and there is still no picture, the fault is the HDMI driver chip beside it, a further micro-soldering job we quote after diagnosis.

Bring your HDMI cable. A failed cable gives the same symptom, and it is the first thing we test.

PS5: disc drive

A PS5 drive that will not take a disc, will not read one or ejects on its own is a replaceable module, but the drive is paired to the console's board and a replacement has to be matched correctly, which we handle as part of the job. If you play everything downloaded and the drive is the only fault, we will say so rather than sell you a drive.

PS5: heat, noise and shutdowns

The PS5 uses liquid-metal compound between the processor and the cooler. It works well for years and then, in some units, it migrates or dries, and the console starts running loud and hot or shutting itself down. The fix is a full strip-down, a clean of the fan and heat sink, and the compound reapplied with the care it needs. The console comes back quieter and cooler. On a PS5 having an HDMI repair, this is done as part of the same job because the cooler has to come off anyway.

PS5: no power

A PS5 that does nothing, or beeps and shuts down, is the power supply or a board-level power fault. The supply is a replaceable unit. Board faults are micro-soldering and we tell you after diagnosis whether the console is worth it.

PS4

Every PS4 fault has a straightforward answer. HDMI ports are replaced the same way as on the PS5, with conventional thermal paste. Drives that will not read are often a laser or a roller, replaceable without swapping the drive. A PS4 that sounds like a jet is dust and dried paste; a clean and repaste fixes it. Power supplies are replaceable units. The PS4 is old enough now that on some board faults the honest answer is a replacement console, and we say so.

Controllers

DualSense and DualShock stick drift is the analogue sensor wearing out and is a repair: the worn sticks or modules are replaced. The DualSense Edge has modular sticks that swap as a unit. Adaptive triggers that have gone loose or noisy, charging ports that only work at an angle, and batteries that will not hold a charge are all bench work. Bring the controller on its own.

Your saves and account

Nothing we do touches your games, saves or account. Cloud saves are worth having on regardless, and if a board fault means the storage cannot be read, they are what brings your progress back on a replacement.

Turnaround

PlayStation work is a leave-it-with-us job, typically a day or two for an HDMI port, a drive, or a strip-down and repaste, because of the full disassembly and the extended test afterwards. Controllers are usually quicker.

Questions people ask

My PS5 turns on but the TV says no signal. What is wrong?

The HDMI port, almost every time. It is replaced by micro-soldering, the thermal compound is redone as part of the job, and the console is tested under load on a real display. Bring your HDMI cable so we can rule it out.

Can you replace a PS5 disc drive?

Yes. The drive is a module paired to the board, and we match the replacement correctly. If you play downloaded games only, we will tell you the drive is optional.

Why is my PS5 so loud?

Usually dust and the liquid-metal compound having migrated. A strip-down, clean and correct reapplication brings it back to quiet.

Is a PS4 still worth repairing?

Usually, for an HDMI port, a drive laser, a fan clean or a power supply. On some board faults the honest answer is a replacement, and we say so.

Can stick drift be fixed?

Yes. The worn stick sensors or modules are replaced. It is a repair, not a reason to buy a new controller.

Will I lose my saves?

No. Nothing we do touches storage or your account.
