Start with the cable

Before anything else: try a different cable and a different charger, ideally ones you know work on another phone. Cables fail far more often than ports, and a cable that has been bent at the plug end for a year will charge intermittently in exactly the way a worn port does. If a known-good cable fixes it, you are done and you did not need us. If you are not sure, bring your usual cable with you and we will test it first, because it is the quickest way to rule out the cheapest fault.

Lint, and why the port is not broken

A phone port is a small open cavity that rides in a pocket or a bag all day. Fibres from fabric pack into the bottom of it, a little at a time, until the plug can no longer seat all the way in. The symptoms are precise: the cable feels loose, it only charges when it is pushed in at an angle or propped, it stops charging when the phone is moved, or it charges slowly because only some of the pins are making contact. On a phone that was fine last month and now "needs a new port", this is the cause more often than not.

Cleaning the port properly takes minutes. It has to be done with a non-conductive tool and some care, because the pins inside are fine and the wrong tool bends them, which turns a free fix into a replacement. If a cleaning is all it needs, that is all we do, and there is no charge for it. We would rather you came back for the next real repair than paid for a port you did not need.

When the port genuinely is worn

Ports do wear out. The contacts inside lose their spring, the housing loosens from the board, or a plug that was yanked sideways bends the tongue in the middle of the connector. On a phone, the port is usually part of a small flex cable or a daughterboard that can be replaced on its own, and that is a normal bench repair. On some models the port is soldered directly to the main board and the job is micro-soldering, which takes longer and which we quote separately.

The signs that point to a worn port rather than lint: the cable seats fully but still wobbles side to side, a cleaning made no difference, the phone charges only with heavy pressure on the plug, or the port is visibly damaged or discoloured. Liquid damage very often shows up first at the charging port, because it is the opening, and a port that is corroded needs the board looked at rather than just the connector swapped.

Wireless charging, buttons and the other ports

The same bench handles wireless charging coils that have stopped working, power and volume buttons that have gone soft or stuck, and the headphone jack on phones that still have one. On tablets the charging port is a larger version of the same story, and on game consoles the HDMI port is the console equivalent of the charging port, the one small connector that takes all the plugging and unplugging. What it costs and how long

A cleaning is free and takes minutes. A port-on-flex replacement is a same-visit job on most phones, and the price is quoted before the phone is opened. A soldered port is a longer job and we will tell you the timing when we quote it. If the port is fine and the fault is on the board, we say so, and we will tell you honestly whether the phone is worth the repair.

Your data

Port work does not touch storage. Everything on the phone stays where it is. The one exception is a phone that has been in liquid, where the port is the symptom and the board is the problem; on those, we attempt data recovery first if the phone will not stay on, and we tell you the odds before you decide anything.

What to bring

The phone and the cable and charger you normally use. That is it. If the phone is completely dead, tell the counter, because the diagnosis starts with whether it takes any charge at all on a known-good supply.
